Golaghat’s Nikhamoni Bora Propels Assam into Aquatic Adventure Sports
Inspiring the next generation of athletes from Assam, 23-year-old water sports enthusiast Nikhamoni Bora has made history as the state’s first certified female sailor. Following in the footsteps of trailblazers like sprinter Hima Das and Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain, Bora’s journey marks a significant stride in the emerging field of water sports in India.
Hailing from Golaghat, Lovlina Borgohain’s hometown, Bora’s achievements are a testament to determination and passion. “Hima and Lovlina have been my role models. I am glad to have started my journey in water sports, which is still in its nascent stage in India,” says Bora.
Nikhamoni’s accolades are already impressive. She has won three windsurfing titles, securing two gold and one bronze medal between December 2023 and April 2024. Recognizing her efforts, the Directorate of Sports & Youth Welfare, Government of Assam, awarded her ₹3 lakh and a place in the India Book of Records for “the most windsurfing tournaments won by a female.” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised her on Twitter, stating, “Happy to see our girls break so many glass ceilings. Assam is proud of her.”
Bora’s journey, however, was far from easy. She faced societal pressure to choose a “safer” career but found strength in her family’s unwavering support and her experiences with the National Cadet Corps (NCC). Initially involved in rifle shooting and weightlifting, she discovered her true calling in water sports after her NCC Commanding Officer introduced her to sailing. Bora went on to earn Level 1 and Level 2 sailing certifications from the Yachting Association of India, eventually branching into windsurfing and kiteboarding.
Corporate sponsorship has been a crucial pillar in Bora’s development. Cairn, in particular, played a pivotal role by covering her kiteboarding training fees, which had previously been a significant obstacle. Reflecting on this, Bora shared, “After multiple rejections, I learned about Cairn’s support for athletes. I sent them a letter, and within three days of starting my training, I was informed that my fees had been covered. Their belief in me boosted my morale and fueled my dreams.”
Cairn’s support enabled her to train at Aqua Outback, where expert guidance in June 2024 helped refine her skills and ensured a safe, enriching experience. “As the first homegrown youth sailor from the state, I proudly achieved my goal of becoming a national gold medalist in kiteboarding, with your blessings,” Bora says. “Cairn’s commitment to nurturing talent has been instrumental in helping me chase my passion.”
Committed to inspiring the next generation, Bora is determined to pave the way for aspiring sailors, especially young girls from her village and beyond. She plans to guide a batch of young girls in a Morigaon camp, introducing them to kayaking and canoeing. She also acknowledges the Assam Government’s efforts to elevate sports beyond mere recreation. “I have miles to go,” she says, her eyes gleaming with determination and steely resolve.
With India’s bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics on the horizon, this is a critical moment for the nation to invest in its future athletes. Corporate backing for regional sports initiatives can play a transformative role in not only promoting individual talent but also elevating India’s sporting profile on the global stage. By supporting young athletes, corporates can help shape a brighter future for Assam and the country as a whole.
