Padmashree Awardee Arup Dutta Calls for Introspection on National Press Day
Guwahati – Celebrating National Press Day, renowned author and Padmashree awardee Arup Kumar Dutta delivered an insightful lecture on “Changing Dynamics of Mass Media: Freedom and Credibility” at an event organized by Gauhati Press Club.
Dutta reflected on the evolution of India’s media landscape, from its early post-independence days to the present, highlighting financial sustainability and credibility as key challenges. He urged introspection rather than celebration on National Press Day, emphasizing the critical role of readers and viewers in helping media uphold its neutrality and fulfill its role as society’s watchdog.
He discussed how changes in media ownership, journalistic outlook, and audience preferences have undermined trust in the media. Dutta also noted the shift caused by electronic media’s rise, followed by the internet and social media, which have forced traditional media to adapt to new public demands.
“All stakeholders, including journalists and the public, must work together for the media to regain its credibility and serve society effectively,” Dutta remarked.
The event was attended by Gauhati Press Club President Sushmita Goswami, General Secretary Sanjoy Ray, and senior journalists Sushanta Talukdar, Nitumoni Saikia, Montu Saikia, and others, fostering discussions on the challenges facing modern journalism.
