On-Duty Cop Allegedly Commits Suicide After Firing at Woman in Assam

Dibrugarh: An on-duty police officer in Assam’s Dibrugarh district reportedly died by suicide after allegedly shooting himself with his service revolver following an altercation with a woman, officials revealed.

The incident transpired in the Lahowal area around 2 am on Saturday, as per police sources.

The deceased officer, identified as Anupam Gowala, hailed from Jorhat district and served as the officer-in-charge of Namrup police station, Dibrugarh.

The woman involved was identified as Bishnupriya Lahon Gogoi, residing in the Rangpuria area under the Lahowal police station.

According to Bipul Gogoi, the woman’s husband and an alleged eyewitness, the police officer forcibly entered their residence at approximately 2 am and demanded his wife accompany him. “When I attempted to intervene, he brandished his firearm, issuing warnings and threats,” Bipul recounted.

Bipul claimed that when his wife refused to comply with the officer’s demands, a confrontation ensued, resulting in Gowala firing at her, inflicting severe injuries. “Subsequently, he turned the gun on himself and shot himself in front of me,” Bipul recounted.

Bipul called the police, who arrived at the scene and recovered the deceased officer’s body. Meanwhile, his wife received medical attention at a nearby hospital for her injuries.

Police authorities assured a thorough investigation into the incident, acknowledging its sensitive nature.
