Guwahati: Gauhati High Court has directed the government and concerned departments to take immediate steps to cover all open drains in Guwahati following a hearing on a public interest litigation regarding the growing danger posed by open drains in the city.

The court observed that open drains and sewers across the city are creating serious risks for public safety and ordered authorities to ensure that all such drains are covered at the earliest.

The High Court also directed the authorities to take similar measures in other towns and urban areas of Assam to prevent drains from remaining open.

The court asked the concerned departments to submit a detailed progress report by May 25 regarding the steps taken to address the issue. It also directed the Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation to remain prepared to appear before the court whenever required and provide updates on the matter.

The directions were issued during the hearing of a public interest litigation filed by advocate Sandeep Chamaria.

Speaking to the media after the hearing, Chamaria said the court clearly asked the government to file an affidavit explaining what measures have been taken to close the open drains and what work is currently underway.

He added that the court stressed the importance of keeping the GMC Commissioner actively involved so that complete information regarding the ongoing work can be presented before the court whenever necessary.

The High Court also took note of accidents and hardships caused by open drains not only in Guwahati but also in other towns across Assam.

Several incidents of injuries and deaths due to open drains have been reported in Guwahati in recent years, especially during the monsoon season when drains remain submerged under rainwater, creating danger for pedestrians and motorists. The court’s order has been widely welcomed by residents as an important step towards improving public safety.
