Guwahati: Weather officials have issued forecasts predicting continued intense precipitation throughout the week in Northeast India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a regional cyclonic circulation is facilitating the movement of moisture from the Bay of Bengal to the northeastern states, exacerbating the rainfall in the region.

In light of the IMD’s predictions, Arunachal Pradesh is bracing for light to moderate rain or snow, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, from Tuesday to Saturday (April 2-6). Similarly, several regions in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura are expected to experience similar intensities of rainfall during this period.

Furthermore, the IMD has warned of heavy rains, ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm, over Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday and Thursday. Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to witness heavy rainfall or snowfall until Saturday, heightening concerns over potential disruptions and hazards in the affected areas.

It is to noted that chaos ensued at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) on Sunday as the roof of the airport collapsed under the strain of intense rainfall. The downpour inundated the airport, exacerbating existing disruptions caused by heavy rains in the region.

The airport, which has been grappling with numerous challenges due to incessant heavy rainfall, faced further setbacks as rainwater seeped in, leading to extensive flooding. The collapse of the roof compounded the situation, causing inconvenience to passengers and disrupting flight operations.
