Raijor Dal Wins Only in Opposition Areas, Fails in Akhil Gogoi’s Sibsagar

Guwahati: Raijor Dal, a new political party led by Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, took part in the Assam panchayat elections for the first time. The party won 3 Zilla Parishad seats and 19 Anchalik Panchayat seats. But these wins only came from areas ruled by opposition parties like Congress and AIUDF—not from BJP-ruled areas.

Raijor Dal did not win any seat in Sibsagar district, where Akhil Gogoi is the MLA. Out of 12 Zilla Parishad seats in Sibsagar, BJP won 11, and its ally AGP won 1. This was a big loss for Raijor Dal in its home area.

The 3 Zilla Parishad seats that Raijor Dal won came from:

  • Naoboicha, ruled by Congress MLA Bharat Narah
  • Dalgaon and Gauripur, both ruled by AIUDF MLAs

The party also won a few Anchalik Panchayat seats in places like Dhubri, Barpeta, and Morigaon. These areas are also controlled by opposition MLAs.

In a press statement, Akhil Gogoi and party leader Bhasco D. Saikia said: “We could not do well in Sibsagar because Congress also fought in all seats. This divided the votes.”

Raijor Dal said 224 Gram Panchayat members supported by the party won in different places, including 43 in Sibsagar. But in Sibsagar district, there are 82 Anchalik Panchayat seats, and the party won only 1.

On the other side, BJP said the results were a big success. BJP President Dilip Saikia said that the people gave a strong and clear message by voting for BJP and its allies. He said they won more than 80% of Zilla and Anchalik Panchayat seats. “Our elected members will work hard for the people and help build a better Assam,” Saikia said.

This result shows that Raijor Dal is still weak in BJP areas. Even in Akhil Gogoi’s home district, the party could not win. The wins only came from places where BJP is not strong. This is a big challenge for Raijor Dal if it wants to grow in Assam politics.
