Guwahati: Starting January next year, only electric and CNG-powered buses will be allowed to operate on routes 23 and 36 along GS Road in Guwahati. This major decision aims to make the route a “Green Road” and promote clean and safe public transport.

An important meeting was held today at the Kamrup Metropolitan District Transport Officer’s office under the leadership of Tamsin Aftab, Secretary and Assistant Transport Commissioner of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA). The meeting was attended by senior transport and police officials including Additional Transport Commissioner Ajit Kumar Sharma, Transport Officer Gautam Das, ASTC Chief Manager Biju Deka, ACPs of Traffic Deepjyoti Dadhra and Priya Boro, and other members of the Guwahati City Transport Corporation.

Tamsin Aftab confirmed that from January, only electric or CNG buses will be allowed on the two routes. Owners of diesel buses currently running on these routes have been asked to shift their vehicles to other roads in the city or convert to CNG to continue service on GS Road.

Additional Commissioner Ajit Kumar Sharma urged all vehicle owners and transport staff to cooperate with the decision for a greener future. Transport Officer Gautam Das highlighted that the move will reduce traffic congestion and pollution, making the road safer and eco-friendly. He also requested the expansion of bus services from Guwahati to nearby towns such as Jagiroad, Baihata Chariali, Bijoynagar, Hajo, and Sualkuchi.

ASTC official Biju Deka discussed the operational aspects and cost of installing CNG kits in vehicles. Tamsin Aftab concluded the meeting by requesting stakeholders to submit any concerns or difficulties in writing to the RTA office.

The step marks a significant push towards sustainable urban transportation in Guwahati.
