Arun Sarma, the legendary Assamese playwright and recipient of both the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, will be remembered through special performances of his acclaimed play Anupam Andhar in Guwahati on May 23 and 24.
The production is being organised by Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya at the Surjya Club Auditorium.
Directed and conceptualised by noted theatre personality Manik Roy, the play will feature emerging actors Mriganga and Atrayee in important roles.
First published in 2013, Anupam Andhar is regarded as one of the final major full-length plays written by Arun Sarma during his literary career. The play remains one of the most discussed contemporary Assamese theatrical works and is known for exploring existential questions, human relationships and social complexities through the style of absurd theatre.
Arun Sarma is widely recognised as a pioneer of Assamese absurd theatre and played a major role in introducing modern European avant-garde theatrical forms, including expressionism, to Assamese audiences.
Following the playwright’s demise, several theatre groups across Northeast India have continued staging Anupam Andhar as a tribute to his contribution to Assamese literature and theatre. Productions by Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya under the leadership of Manik Roy have received particular attention for keeping Sarma’s theatrical legacy alive.
