Guwahati: Samagra Shiksha, Assam signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with six leading organisations for advancing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), technology and innovative education solutions in the school education sector of Assam. The ceremonial signing was held on 4 September 2026 at the State Mission Office, Samagra Shiksha, Assam.
The Hon’ble Minister, Education, Assam graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha, Assam; Executive Director, Samagra Shiksha, Assam; Officer on Special Duty, Samagra Shiksha, Assam along with representatives of the participating organisations were present at the ceremony.
The MoUs were signed by the Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha, Assam and representatives of the six (6) organisations. The partnerships seek to leverage AI and technology to strengthen teacher capacity, improve foundational learning, enhance assessment systems, promote digital creativity and innovation and support the enrolment and retention of out-of-school adolescents.
Brief Profile of the Partner Organisations and their Deliverables:
1. Google AI
The partnership with Google AI aims to provide teachers in Assam with secure digital identities and access to AI-powered educational tools, including Notebook and Gemini, to support teaching, learning and administrative efficiency.
The initiative will include localised training content in regional languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi and English. The training will focus on foundational AI literacy and the effective use of AI for pedagogy, lesson planning and administrative work.
Google will also collaborate with the State’s existing teacher-training infrastructure, including SCERT and DIETs to strengthen professional development and ensure quality implementation.
A hybrid training and accreditation model will support teachers in meeting the 50 hours of annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) envisaged under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The partnership will also encourage the formation of Google Educator Groups (GEGs) to facilitate peer learning and sharing of locally relevant AI-based teaching practices.
2. IIT Madras – Bodhan AI
The partnership with IIT Madras – Bodhan AI aims to build teachers’ proficiency in the use of Artificial Intelligence for lesson planning, content creation and simplification and assessment design. Bodhan AI is The Centre of Excellence in AI for Education a Section 8 company incubated at IIT Madras and funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The organisation is building the Bharat EduAI Stack as a sovereign Digital Public Infrastructure for education.
Through Bodhan AI, around 1 lakh teachers of Grades 6 to 12 are proposed to be trained by 31 May 2027. The training will be of approximately 2.5 hours and will include a handbook and access to relevant AI tools.
The training will follow a cascade model, beginning with the training of 40 expert teachers as Master Trainers. These Master Trainers will subsequently train other teachers in successive rounds. After completion of the training, teachers will undertake an assessment through the DIKSHA portal. Successful completion will be recognised as part of the 50 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) along with a completion certificate.
Teachers will be able to practice with Bodhan AI’s ‘Teacher Assistant Bot’, bringing multilingual AI-powered teaching support directly to the teachers.
Bodhan’s Teacher Assistant Bot is a pan-India AI workspace designed to help teachers plan, create, assign, assess and refine classroom work more efficiently while keeping the teacher firmly in control. Teachers can generate lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, homework and revision sheets by specifying parameters such as grade, subject, topic, duration, difficulty and assessment requirements, and can also upload student work for evaluation with specific marking criteria.
Importantly, every AI-generated output is treated as a starting point for the teacher to review, edit, regenerate or discard, rather than an automatic classroom decision. The Teacher Assistant Bot is therefore positioned not simply as an AI content generator, but as a working environment that helps teachers turn their teaching intent into classroom-ready work, faster.
3. LEHS – Wadhwani AI
The partnership with LEHS – Wadhwani AI aims to develop, deploy and monitor an AI-enabled Oral Reading Fluency Solution for assessing foundational literacy among students in government schools.
The solution will be implemented for students of Grades 3 to 8 in Language 1 and Language 2. It will facilitate systematic assessment and diagnosis of students’ reading fluency and help integrate AI-enabled assessment into the existing education system.
The initiative is expected to strengthen evidence-based interventions and enable timely identification of students requiring additional support in reading.
4. Foundation to Educate Girls Globally (Educate Girls)
Educate Girls is a non-profit organisation working to improve access to education for girls and young women in rural and educationally marginalised communities. Since 2007, the organisation has partnered with state governments to identify out-of-school girls and strengthen their enrolment, retention and learning outcomes.
The partnership with Educate Girls aims to strengthen the identification, enrolment and retention of out-of-school adolescents aged 15–18 years, particularly girls, through the Assam State Open School (ASOS) and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
Under the partnership, a Technical Assistance Unit will support Samagra Shiksha, Assam in hotspot-based identification of out-of-school adolescents, mobilisation campaigns, enrolment help desks, motivational support for learner retention and linkages with vocational opportunities.
Key Focus:
- Identification and Mobilisation: Identify eligible learners through government systems and community platforms and generate awareness on open-schooling opportunities.
- Counselling and Enrolment: Support learners and families with information on eligibility, courses, admission and examinations, and facilitate ASOS/NIOS enrolment.
- Learning Support: Pilot community-level support to help learners engage with self-learning materials, follow study schedules and prepare for examinations.
- Digital and Academic Resources: Provide learner-friendly study calendars, digital resources, subject support materials and mock tests.
- Convergence and Capacity Building: Strengthen coordination with Samagra Shiksha, district/block structures and open-schooling institutions.
- Tracking and Monitoring: Track learners from identification to enrolment, learning engagement and examination to provide timely support.
5. EkStep – AXL
The partnership with EkStep – AXL (Assisted Language and Math Learning) aims to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy through personalised, AI-assisted learning.
AXL is an open-source AI-enabled learning system designed to improve students’ reading and mathematics skills. It develops individual learning profiles based on students’ responses, accuracy, pace and progress, enabling the system to provide personalised learning pathways, practice and feedback.
The initiative will support students of Classes 3 to 8 and the AXL platform will be hosted in the State Data Centre, facilitating its integration into the State’s education ecosystem.
6. Canva Education
The partnership with Canva Education will promote digital literacy, creativity, visual communication, design thinking and innovation among teachers and students.
The programme will initially be implemented in 70 schools. Canva Education will support teachers in creating lesson plans, learning modules, classroom-ready materials and structured digital courses, including content related to foundational literacy and numeracy.
The initiative will also encourage student and teacher participation in design campaigns, creative challenges and innovation showcases. In addition, guidance will be provided on the responsible and age-appropriate use of Artificial Intelligence, including appropriate teacher oversight and classroom safeguards.
The programme aligns with the educational priorities of Samagra Shiksha and the vision of NEP 2020 for developing creativity, digital skills and 21st-century competencies among learners.
A Major Step towards Technology-Enabled Education
The signing of these six MoUs marks a significant step towards strengthening Assam’s school education system through Artificial Intelligence, digital technology, personalised learning, technology-enabled assessment, teacher capacity building and innovative approaches to reaching out-of-school children.
Through these partnerships, Samagra Shiksha, Assam seeks to create a more technology-enabled, inclusive and learner-centric education ecosystem, while empowering teachers and improving learning opportunities for children and adolescents across the State.
