Guwahati: Dr Amal Chandra Kataki, former Director of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati, will be honoured with the highest honorary degree D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) by Gauhati University. The degree will be conferred during the 32nd Convocation of the university on April 25, 2025.
The convocation will be graced by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, who will attend as the Chief Guest, along with the Governor of Assam Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, and other dignitaries.
In a letter to Dr Kataki, Vice Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta stated that the Executive Council of the university decided to honour him for his tireless efforts in medical science through teaching and research. The letter praised Dr Kataki’s brilliance and dedication, which have helped improve the lives of countless cancer patients.
Dr Kataki expressed his gratitude to Gauhati University, saying this honour reflects collective leadership and teamwork during his long years of service at Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute. He also acknowledged the support from the Government of Assam, Lokabandhu Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Society, North Eastern Council, Ministry of DoNER, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Atomic Energy, and Tata Memorial Centre.
Dr Kataki is currently serving as the Director of Health Education and Research at the Guwahati unit of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva Vishwavidyalaya.
