Guwahati: A tragic road accident in Guwahati’s Lalmati area on the evening of April 9 claimed the lives of two scooter riders after they were hit by a speeding dumper truck. Local said they died on the spot. Their identities are yet to be confirmed by the authorities. Accoeding to a source a child may have also been injured.
Massive Protest at the Accident Site
Soon after the accident, hundreds of people gathered at the scene. The crowd blocked the road, causing heavy traffic jam on both sides of the highway.
Allegations Against Police
Locals and eyewitnesses alleged that police allowed the dumper truck to pass despite earlier violations. Some claimed that police had accepted bribes, which led to the truck being on the road. This allegation further increased public anger.
Attempt to Set the Truck on Fire
Some angry protestors tried to set the dumper truck on fire, but police and emergency officials arrived on time and stopped the situation from getting worse.
Heavy Police Deployment
Senior officials including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and police teams from Hatigaon and Basistha stations rushed to the spot. Additional teams from the CRPF were also deployed to control the crowd and maintain peace.
Driver in Custody
The dumper truck driver has been arrested and taken into police custody.
Situation Remains Tense
As of now, the area remains tense, with large numbers of people demanding justice for the victims and action against the police involved in the alleged misconduct.
The police have assured that a full investigation is underway.
