Guwahati: The Centenary celebration of Sports Journalism in Assam concluded on July 1 at the DTPR indoor stadium in Ulubari. Former India hockey captain and Hockey India representative Dilip Tirkey highlighted the important role played by journalists in the promotion of sports and athletes.

“I congratulate the sports journalists of Assam on achieving this milestone. I must say journalists play a vital role in the promotion of sports and sportspersons. And the role was even more crucial in the earlier days. Only a handful of people used to watch the game, but the next day, the match reports go to the doorsteps of lakhs of people through newspapers,” Tirkey said attending the programme organised by the Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA).

He also appreciated Assam players such as Lovlina Borgohain, Hima Das, Nayanmoni Saikia, Amlan Borgohain, and others for bringing pride to the country.

Earlier, veteran Italian sports journalist and president of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), Gianni Merlo, joined the program online and extended his greetings on this special occasion.

Athlete Hima Das, Lawn Bowls player Nayanmoni Saikia, former footballers Toshen Bora and Swadhin Dekaraja, Assam Olympic Association (AOA) general secretary Lakhya Konwar, and Director of Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Assam, Pradip Timung, were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.

Several sports personalities, sports journalists, sports organizers, and sports promoters were also honored for their contributions to sports journalism.
