Assam Celebrates World Blood Donor Day, Honoring Donors

Guwahati: The Assam State Blood Transfusion Council (ASBTC) observed World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2024, at Sri Sri Madhabdeva International Auditorium, Kalakshetra. The slogan for this year’s event was “20 years of celebrating giving: Thank you, blood donors!”

Chief Guest, Health & Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, highlighted the importance of blood donors in saving lives. “The 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day is an excellent opportunity to thank blood donors for their life-saving contributions,” he said. Mahanta noted that Assam currently has 83 blood banks, with plans to establish seven more, and emphasized the role of uniformed personnel in donating blood and organizing camps. “Blood donation should be a mass movement,” he concluded.

Celebrity guest, actor Kopil Bora, praised the blood donors. “I congratulate each blood donor here for their life-saving contributions and hope the blood donation movement continues,” he stated.

In his welcome speech, Commissioner & Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Health & FW Deptt, Ashok Babu, IAS, expressed gratitude to all blood donors for their invaluable gift. Other dignitaries present included ASBTC Director Dr. Indranoshee Das, Family Welfare Director Kamaljit Talukdar, Health Services Director Dr. Umesh Phaugcho, and Dr. Dipankar Baruah, Officer in-charge of the Blood Centre at GMCH.

The event honored 31 blood donors, including Gyan Chand Jain, who has donated blood 113 times. A voluntary blood donation camp at the venue saw 54 donors participate.

This year’s World Blood Donor Day in Assam celebrated the spirit of giving and underscored the critical role of blood donors in healthcare.
