Guwahati: Assamese jewellery, known as ‘Axomiya Gohona,’ has officially received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this news on Wednesday.

“Our traditional jewellery, a priceless part of Assam’s culture, now has its own GI tag,” Sarma posted on X.

He recalled that the state government had proposed this step in the 2018-19 budget to protect local artisans. “I am happy to see this dream come true,” he added.

The Geographical Indications Registry, under the Intellectual Property Office, granted the recognition. The GI Authority’s official website has published the registration details.

The Gems and Jewellery Promotion Council of Assam submitted the application, and the Assam Science and Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) helped in the process.
