Guwahati: A webinar titled ‘সংস্কাৰ (Sanskaar) – Spotlight on the Legacy of Assam’s Sattras’, organized by Cairn Oil & Gas and Fijeeha, brought together historians, cultural scholars, and community leaders to discuss the significance of Assam’s Sattras. These spiritual and cultural institutions, established by Srimanta Sankardev in the 15th century, continue to play a vital role in shaping Assam’s identity.
The discussion emphasized that Sattras are more than spiritual centers—they are hubs for art, music, social reform, and community service. With over 65 Sattras since the first in Majuli, they represent unity, resilience, and the balance of tradition with modernity.
Dibya Jyoti Baruah, the session moderator, highlighted Sattras as symbols of cultural pride and called for youth engagement to ensure their preservation. Arunabh Parasher, Director, Northeast at Cairn Oil & Gas, stressed the need to blend heritage with progress for sustainable development.
Experts like Dr. Bina Kalita traced the Sattras’ evolution, while manuscript expert Mridu Mausam Borah urged better documentation and academic collaboration. Renowned Sattriya dancer Dr. Anwesa Mahanta emphasized preserving the classical essence of Sattriya dance amid modernization.
The webinar concluded with a call for balancing Assam’s cultural legacy with socio-economic growth, empowering youth as torchbearers of innovation and heritage.
