Students Protest in Support of Small Traders Near Cotton University

Guwahati : Students held a protest on Friday to show their support for small traders who have shops in front of Cotton University. The students are not happy about the idea of removing these shops. They met with the Mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Mrigan Sarania, and gave him a letter to express their concerns.

One student who was protesting said they don’t agree with the decision to make the traders leave. These traders have been selling things on the sidewalks for the past many years, and the students think it’s not right to make them go away. At the same time, the students are also against the idea of making a “khao gully” (a place with lots of food stalls) on Hostel Road near Cotton University.

It’s important to note that, earlier, on August 15, the traders on the sidewalks had been instructed to temporarily close their shops due to safety concerns. However, even after that the civic body did not allow the shops to reopen.

A few days ago, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation decided to create khao gully in different parts of Guwahati. One of the places they picked was Hostel Road near Cotton University. But the students don’t like this idea and protested against it too.
