Guwahati: Dr. Biswajit Barooah, a respected orthopedic surgeon, passed away at his residence in Ulubari today at 1:45 PM. He was the son of the late Lokobondhu Dr. Bhubaneshwar Barooah and is survived by his wife, retired professor Gita Barooah.
Dr. Barooah, the founder professor and head of the Department of Orthopedics at Gauhati Medical College (GMC), dedicated his life to advancing orthopedic care and education. After completing his MBBS from AMC in 1956, he served as a registrar in general surgery. He earned his MS in Orthopedics from Patna University, training under the renowned Dr. B. Mukhopaddhya.
In 1970, he joined GMC as an assistant professor and became the head of the department in 1974. Dr. Barooah’s efforts led to Orthopedics becoming an independent department at GMC and the introduction of postgraduate courses in the field. He also established an Artificial Limb Centre and physiotherapy unit for differently-abled individuals.
Dr. Barooah worked in the UK under globally acclaimed orthopedic surgeons like Prof. Churnley, Dr. Newman, and Dr. Osborne. Despite limited resources, he performed complex surgeries and published articles in the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Barooah had a passion for music. He composed the tune for the AMC college song, played the organ at cultural events, and continued to enjoy playing the keyboard in his later years.
Known for his humility and compassion, Dr. Barooah was a patient-friendly doctor and a dedicated teacher. He retired in 1988 and later served as an adviser to the UPSC for medical service recruitment.
Dr. Barooah’s contributions to medicine, education, and music will be fondly remembered.
