Guwahati: More than 3,000 outsourced power workers staged a sit-in protest outside the Assam State Electricity Board’s (ASEB) headquarters, Bijulee Bhawan, on Thursday. The protest, organized by the Assam State Outsource Power Worker’s Union, called for the regularization of over 5,000 contractual positions within the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL), and Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) across the state.

Chanting slogans against Power Minister Nandita Gorlosa and the government, the protesters expressed their frustration over years of neglect and the lack of permanent job security. Krishna Sarmah, president of the union, highlighted the disparity between the government’s ongoing large-scale recruitment drives and the overlooked power sector workers.

“Despite decades of service, 5,233 contractual workers in the power sector have been denied the benefits and job security that they deserve,” Sarmah stated. The union’s demand for justice reflects the growing unrest among these workers, who feel their contributions have been ignored by the government.
