Golaghat: In a shocking incident, a Royal Bengal tiger was killed and cut into pieces by a mob in Bokakhat, Golaghat district of Assam on May 22. According to a report police have detained three people in connection with the killing — Panika Mili, Dhruba Mili, and Trinoy Mili.
According to reports, the angry villagers attacked the tiger after it killed some livestock and created fear in the area. A forest officer said that nearly a thousand people gathered and some used machetes to attack the tiger. The animal’s body was later recovered in the presence of a magistrate and sent for a post-mortem.
Bokakhat MLA Mrinal Talukdar expressed sadness over the incident. He said, “Humans are not the only owners of this planet. We must learn to share space with animals.”
The Assam Forest Department has filed a case and is investigating the matter.
Man-animal conflicts like this are not new in Assam. However, efforts to protect wildlife have helped the number of tigers in the state grow. Forest department data shows that the tiger population increased from 70 in 2006 to 190 in 2019, thanks to conservation programs.
Officials have urged people not to take the law into their own hands and to inform forest authorities in case of danger.
