Asam Sahitya Sabha to Honour Mamang Dai with Lummer Dai Award

Guwahati: The Asam Sahitya Sabha, will confer the Sahitya Surja Lummer Dai Award on renowned writer and journalist Mamang Dai. The award ceremony will be held on June 1, 2025, at Gandhi Secondary School, Tin Ali, Pasighat, to mark the 85th birth anniversary of legendary Assamese writer Lummer Dai.

Mamang Dai, who belongs to the Adi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, is known for her powerful storytelling and deep connection to the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Formerly an IAS officer, over the years, she has earned national recognition through her novels, poems, and essays that beautifully portray the life and traditions of the Northeast.

Her notable works include The Legends of Pensam, The Black Hill, Escaping the Land, and poetry collections such as River Poems. She has received prestigious honours including the Padma Shri (2011) and the Sahitya Akademi Award (2017).

In honouring Mamang Dai, Asam Sahitya Sabha aims to celebrate the shared literary legacy of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The Sabha believes that her writings, which reflect the soul of the Northeast, serve as a bridge between communities and languages.

The Sahitya Surja Lummer Dai Award, named after one of Assam’s most respected literary voices who hailed from Arunachal Pradesh, is a symbol of unity through literature. This year’s award to Mamang Dai highlights the Sabha’s continued efforts to strengthen cross-border literary ties and encourage writers who uphold the spirit of cultural harmony.
