Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued an apology for a social media post centered on the Varna (caste) system in Hinduism, based on a Bhagavad Gita verse. Sarma attributed the post’s deletion to an incorrect translation of Gita Chapter 18, Verse 44 by a team member.

Expressing regret for any offense caused, he highlighted Assam’s commitment to a casteless society, shaped by reform movements led by figures like Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva. Sarma promptly removed the post upon realizing the error.

“As a routine, I upload one sloka of the Bhagavad Gita every morning on my social media handles. Till date, I have posted 668 slokas (669 after the apology). Recently one of my team members posted a sloka from Chapter 18 verse 44 with an incorrect translation,” he wrote on X, Facebook, and other social media handles on December 28 night.
