Guwahati Taxi Drivers Announce 48-Hour Hunger Strike

Guwahati – Taxi drivers in Guwahati will begin a 48-hour hunger strike on November 20, demanding better pay and stricter regulation of private vehicles used for commercial purposes.

The Assam State Drivers’ Union and All Assam Cab Welfare Federation have urged the state transport department to address their grievances. The protest stems from unresolved issues with cab aggregators over low payments for services.

Dhrubaraj Axom, the head of the drivers’ association, highlighted the unfair practices of cab aggregators. “As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, aggregators can charge only 20% commission per trip. However, we are being charged 30-40%, which is causing severe financial strain for thousands of cab drivers in Guwahati. We want the government to implement a proper fare chart based on distance covered,” he stated.

The drivers also expressed frustration over private vehicles being used for commercial purposes without proper regulations, despite the state having a transport department to oversee such matters.
