Guwahati – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the renaming of Karimganj district to Sribhumi in a tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The Assam Cabinet approved the decision on Tuesday.
Over a century ago, Tagore described the area as Sribhumi, meaning “the land of Maa Lakshmi,” recognizing its cultural richness. CM Sarma shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people.”
