Guwahati: A joint operation conducted by the Central and West Police Districts of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, along with the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force, led to the arrest of 26 alleged drug peddlers from areas along railway tracks across the city.
During the operation, police recovered around 29 grams of heroin, along with empty vials and syringes, from the possession of the arrested individuals. The seized drugs have been taken into custody and legal action has been initiated.
The teams also identified and destroyed illegal cannabis plantations weighing nearly 20 kilograms growing along sections of the railway corridor.
Sharing details of the operation at Pan Bazar Police Station, Ankur Jain said the drive was launched to curb drug trafficking and other unlawful activities frequently reported from vulnerable areas along the railway network.
Police said the operation is part of a larger effort to improve public safety, prevent crime and ensure secure movement along important transportation corridors in the city.
At the same time, an eviction drive is also being carried out to remove unauthorized settlements on railway land and nearby areas. Officials said the exercise is being conducted in coordination with the concerned agencies and in accordance with existing rules.
Guwahati Police, GRP and RPF said similar joint operations will continue in the coming weeks to monitor railway corridors, prevent illegal activities and strengthen public security across the city.
