New Delhi: The Centre has approved around Rs 5,000 crore in housing assistance for flood-affected families in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). The government has also approved the construction of 3.8 lakh new houses in the state.
The decisions were taken during a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi.
During the meeting, the Union Minister formally handed over the approval for 3.8 lakh new houses to the Assam Chief Minister.
The meeting also discussed extending housing benefits to eligible tea garden worker families in Assam. After receiving land pattas, eligible tea worker families will be covered under PMAY through a digital survey.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the Union Minister and said the approval of more than 3.8 lakh new houses, priority support for flood-affected families and additional financial assistance for the agriculture sector would provide major support to Assam’s flood recovery efforts.
Assam has suffered widespread damage in this year’s severe floods, with large areas, particularly in Upper Assam, affected by flooding. Many families lost or damaged their homes, while agricultural land also suffered extensive damage.
The new housing and agriculture support from the Centre is expected to play an important role in helping flood-affected families rebuild their lives and support the state’s recovery process.
