As India’s digital economy continues to grow, the need to protect sensitive data has become more important than ever. Digital payments, healthcare records, government services and business operations now generate and use huge amounts of data every day, increasing the need for secure cloud infrastructure within the country.

Cloud technology allows organisations to store, manage and process data through remote data centres instead of depending only on local servers. Today, banks, hospitals, businesses and government agencies use cloud services for important operations, data backup and digital services.

At the same time, cyber threats such as spam calls, phishing and online fraud are becoming more advanced. Airtel said its AI-powered anti-spam system has identified more than 93 billion spam calls, 4 billion spam messages and blocked over 1.4 million fraudulent links.

With data protection and government regulations becoming increasingly important, sovereign cloud is emerging as a major solution. A sovereign cloud keeps sensitive data, infrastructure, encryption keys, backups and cloud operations under the legal and regulatory control of the country where the data is stored.

Airtel introduced Airtel Cloud through Xtelify in August 2025, becoming India’s first telecom operator to launch a sovereign telco-grade cloud platform, according to the company. The platform was initially developed to support Airtel’s own digital operations and is designed to handle up to 1.4 billion transactions per minute.

Airtel Cloud has been built with a sovereign-by-design system, with data, infrastructure and cloud management operations hosted and governed within India. The company says the platform offers 99.99% uptime, geo-redundancy, disaster recovery, immutable backups and continuous data replication through its data centres and nationwide network.

The platform also offers IaaS, PaaS and GenAI-enabled services, aimed at helping businesses and government organisations manage their digital operations while maintaining greater control over their data.

With data security, data residency and regulatory compliance becoming important for sectors such as banking, healthcare, defence, taxation and critical infrastructure, Airtel Cloud aims to provide an India-based cloud platform for the country’s growing digital ecosystem.
