Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has officially become opposition-free, with all 60 wards now under the control of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). This was confirmed by Minister Mayor Mrigen Sarania, after Masuma Begum, the AAP councillor from Ward No. 42, joined the BJP on Monday.
The joining ceremony was held at the Assam BJP Office in Basistha in the presence of Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia and Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. Other notable leaders who joined the party include Pranjal Kalita, General Secretary of Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Kalpana Das, AGP councillor from Ward No. 10, and Anjali Brahma, General Secretary of the ST Cell of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Many other leaders and workers from Congress and AAP also joined the BJP during the event.
In the 2022 GMC elections, elections were held in 57 out of 60 wards, with three BJP candidates winning unopposed. BJP won 49 wards, AGP won 6, and one seat each went to AAP and AJP. But now, both those councillors have joined BJP, making GMC fully run by BJP and AGP.
The GMC currently functions with 59 councillors, as the councillor from Ward No. 47 passed away earlier.
