The decision comes just weeks after Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the state, marking a setback for the Congress in Assam. Earlier, two other Congress MLAs, Siddeque Ahmed and Sashikanta Das, were suspended for extending support to the BJP-led government.

Purkayastha, who resigned from his position as working president of the PCC, and Das cited the intention to bring development to their constituencies, Karimganj North and Mangaldoi, respectively, as the reason for their decision to support Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government.
