Guwahati: A tragic accident in Guwahati’s Bhootnath-Kalipur area on Friday morning claimed the life of a college student and left another seriously injured after a large tree fell on their scooter.
The deceased has been identified as Parismita Hazarika, a student from Sonari. The injured rider, Jyotirmoy Mohan, is undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and is reported to be out of danger.
According to eyewitnesses, the two students were travelling to Pandu College to appear for an examination when the incident occurred. As they were passing through the Bhootnath-Kalipur area near the railway line, a large decayed tree suddenly collapsed onto the road and fell directly on their scooter.
While Jyotirmoy managed to survive despite sustaining injuries, Parismita was trapped under the tree. Local residents immediately rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Officials from the railway department and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) also joined the rescue efforts.
Both students were taken to hospital, where doctors declared Parismita dead on arrival. Hospital authorities said she suffered severe injuries, particularly to her spine and waist, which led to her death.
Doctors confirmed that Jyotirmoy is receiving treatment and his condition is stable.
The incident has triggered strong public anger in the area. Local residents alleged that the tree had been in a dangerous condition for a long time and that repeated concerns raised by the public were ignored by the concerned authorities.
“We had been worried about the tree for a long time. Large branches had fallen earlier as well, but no action was taken. This tragedy could have been prevented,” a local resident said.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Authorities are examining which department was responsible for maintaining the tree and whether any negligence was involved.
The tragic death of a student on her way to an examination has cast a pall of gloom over the city. Many people have also taken to social media to express grief and demand a survey of dangerous trees across Guwahati to prevent similar incidents in the future.
