Guwahati: An eleven-member delegation from Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City Project met with Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan on June 10. The visit aimed to strengthen ties and explore areas of cooperation between Assam and Bhutan.
The delegation included key members from the project’s Core Working Group and officials from the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General.
Welcoming the team, Dr. Sarma appreciated Bhutan’s efforts and highlighted the importance of the project in boosting regional cooperation and sustainable development. He assured full support from the Assam Government, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, and said that Assam is keen to work closely with Bhutan.
Dr. Sarma also pointed out how the Gelephu Mindfulness City can help deepen people-to-people connections and benefit the youth in both regions through education, skill development, business opportunities, and cultural exchange.
The Chief Minister invited the Bhutanese delegation to visit Assam’s key institutions like universities and hospitals to identify possible areas of partnership. He also recalled the visit of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to Assam and expressed hope of hosting the Royal Family again in the future.
He suggested that during their next visit, a larger meeting with various sectors should be arranged to strengthen collaboration further.
The Bhutanese team was led by Dasho Arun Kapur and included notable members such as former Chief Justice Dasho Tshering Wangchuk, MP Dasho Tashi Wangyal, and officials from the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General – Consul General Jigme Thinlye Namgyal and Consul Phurpa Tshering.
Senior Assam officials including Special Chief Secretary Syedain Abbasi, Principal Secretary Dr. K.K. Dwivedi, and Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta also attended the meeting.
