Assam Schools Asked to Extend Hours for Chandrayaan-3 Streaming, Concerns Raised About Feasibility

Guwahati: Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyaan Mission issued a notice requesting educational institutes to extend their school hours until 6 p.m. on August 23. The purpose is to facilitate live streaming of Chandrayaan-3’s soft landing.
It is believed that watching the historic event live within the school premises would foster scientific curiosity among students. However, questions have arisen about the feasibility of this plan due to the challenges faced by many schools in Assam.
Some schools lack proper electricity, suitable halls for gatherings, speakers for amplification, hi-tech digital boards, projectors, laptops, and trained personnel to operate them. The issue of network connectivity is also raised.
Concerns have been raised about how students, especially younger ones, will cope with staying in school until 6 p.m.
Issues like hunger, sleep, and comfort are highlighted.
An Assam Legislative Assembly report from December 2022 reveals that over a thousand schools in the state are without electricity.
More than 10,000 schools lacked partition walls; 1124 schools had no drinking water facilities; and many schools were lacking proper toilet facilities, the report added.
