Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the new Co-District headquarters in Jalukbari, marking a significant step towards decentralizing governance in Assam on October 5. As part of the government’s initiative to streamline services and bring essential governance closer to the people, 39 Co-Districts have been created in the first phase.

The Co-Districts, including Jalukbari, aim to reduce the burden of distance for citizens seeking services such as land revenue, disaster management, and welfare works. The Chief Minister emphasized that this move would enhance the efficiency of service delivery and bring governance to the grassroots level.

Dr. Sarma highlighted that the new Co-District model empowers these units with greater authority compared to traditional sub-divisions, allowing for more effective governance. The initiative aligns with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of decentralization and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for strong local governance.

The inauguration ceremony included the planting of a ‘Bakul’ sapling, symbolizing growth and progress. Various dignitaries, including MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi and Mayor Mrigen Sarania, attended the event.
