AIIMS Guwahati Completes One Year, Treats Over 2 Lakh Cases

Guwahati: AIIMS Guwahati, situated at Changsari near Guwahati, celebrated its first anniversary with remarkable achievements. Since its inauguration on April 14, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the institute has treated over 2 lakh cases, highlighting its crucial role in providing healthcare services to the region.

‘The institute commenced its outpatient department (OPD) services in April 2023 and has since witnessed daily average attendance of 717 patients per day, including new and revisiting cases,’ media report stated. This underscores the significant impact AIIMS Guwahati has had on healthcare accessibility in the area.

Established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) in May 2017, AIIMS Guwahati is an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. It comprises a medical college with an annual intake of 125 MBBS students and a nursing college with an annual intake of 75 students. The hospital boasts a 750-bedded in-patient facility with specialty and super-specialty departments equipped with state-of-the-art amenities.

Dr. Chitra Sarkar, a renowned neuropathologist and former Professor of Pathology and former Dean (Research) at AIIMS New Delhi, serves as the first President of AIIMS Guwahati. Meanwhile, Prof. Ashok Puranik assumed the role of Executive Director in July 2022, bringing a wealth of experience from his tenure at AIIMS Jodhpur.

AIIMS Guwahati commenced its academic session in January 2021, with a batch of 50 MBBS students and 21 faculty members from a temporary campus located at Narakasur Hill-Top, Guwahati. The institute has since expanded, welcoming new batches of students and faculty members across various departments, further bolstering its academic and healthcare capabilities.
