Guwahati: A tragic road accident in Paltan Bazar on Friday morning has created shock across the city. A two-and-a-half-year-old child, Rahela Khatun, died after being hit by a vehicle.
According to reports, the incident took place around 10:30 AM when an unregistered Mahindra Thar hit the child near the roadside. The child was seriously injured and rushed to hospital, but doctors declared her dead.
The body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Police from Paltan Bazar Police quickly reached the spot, seized the vehicle, and detained the driver, identified as Mintu Ali. He is reportedly linked to a car dealership.
After the accident, tension broke out in the area. Angry locals gathered and protested after hearing about the child’s death.
During the chaos, a man named Digambar Deka, who had come forward to help, was mistakenly identified as the driver. The crowd attacked him and also damaged his Swift car. He was later rescued by police and admitted to hospital for treatment.
The child’s family members were seen crying and demanding justice. A relative said they do not want compensation but only want their child back.
There are also allegations that the accused tried to offer money to the family to settle the case.
Police have now brought the situation under control and started an investigation. Action is also expected against those involved in attacking Digambar Deka and damaging his vehicle.
The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and traffic control in the city.
