Guwahati: The results of the Assam Assembly elections have made it clear that the NDA will form the government again under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. With a strong majority, the ruling alliance is set to return to power. At the same time, the election has seen the defeat of several sitting MLAs, including many who had won in 2021.
In Sivasagar, former Amguri MLA Pradip Hazarika faced defeat, while Akhil Gogoi won the seat by a margin of over 10,000 votes. Hazarika finished in third place.
In Bhabanipur–Sarbhog, CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar lost to BJP leader and minister Ranjit Kumar Das by more than 30,000 votes. With this defeat, Left parties have no representation in the Assam Assembly.
The Congress also suffered a major setback. Senior leader and former Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia lost the Nazira seat to BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain by a margin of over 40,000 votes.
In Haflong, former minister Nandita Garlosa, who contested from Congress after being denied a BJP ticket, finished third. BJP candidate Rupali Langthasa won the seat with a margin of around 50,000 votes, while NPP candidate Daniel Langthasa came second.
In Goalpara East, Raijor Dal candidate Abdur Rashid Mandal lost to Congress candidate A.K. Rashid Alam, who secured a comfortable victory.
In Sonai (Barak Valley), AGP MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya was defeated by Congress candidate Aminul Haque Laskar by over 20,000 votes.
One of the most interesting contests was seen in the Algapur–Katlichera seat, where three sitting MLAs were in the fray. Congress candidate Zubeir Anam won the seat, defeating heavyweights like Zakir Hussain Laskar, Nizamuddin Choudhury and Sujam Uddin Laskar.
In Mankachar, Trinamool Congress candidate Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam and former MP Abdul Khaleque.
In Hajo–Sualkuchi, Congress candidate Nandita Das lost to AGP’s Prakash Das by a narrow margin of less than 1,000 votes.
In Rupohihat, Congress candidate Nurul Huda defeated AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam.
The election also saw the defeat of two prominent leaders in Jorhat and Tamulpur. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi and UPPL chief Pramod Boro were rejected by voters in their respective constituencies.
Overall, the election results have blocked the path to Dispur for several prominent leaders, while the NDA moves ahead with a strong mandate to form the next government.
