The 106th birth anniversary of legendary Assamese musician Purushottam Das was commemorated with fervor in a function organized by the Amguri Puberun Cultural Organisation and Sangeet Khanikor Purushottam Das Smriti Raksha Samiti. The event, held at Amguri Auniatia Hemchandra Dev Higher Secondary School, featured dignitaries paying homage to Purushottam Das.

The function commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the school’s principal, Amarjyoti Borthakur. Eminent music director Ramen Choudhury, an adviser of the Smriti Raksha Samiti, laid a wreath at Purushottam Das’s portrait. Various personalities, including Samiti officials, editors, and awardee Umananda Dowerah, were felicitated.
Kabin Das, the Samiti’s editor, explained the event’s purpose, while Prashant Sharma, a noted theatre artist and director, spoke about Purushottam Das’s life. Ramen Choudhury, recalling his time with Purushottam Das, emphasized the artist’s rich legacy.
The cultural evening featured chorus performances and renditions of Purushottam Das’s compositions by various artists. An audio-visual song composed by Purushottam Das was released, and the Sangeet Khanikor Purushottam Das Smriti Raksha Samiti Award for 2023 was presented to Umananda Dowerah, the archivist of Assam’s musical heritage.
Umananda Dowerah, the owner of Umananda Gramophone Record Museum and Research Centre, received accolades for his dedication to preserving Assam’s musical history. The function concluded with a speech by Kumar Deepak Das and a vote of thanks by Kripamoy Das.
