Poor-Quality School Uniforms for Class 9 and 10 Spark Controversy in Assam

Guwahati: A new controversy has come up in Assam about the school uniforms given to students of Class 9 and 10. An association of uniform suppliers has said that the quality of these uniforms is very poor. But officials from Samagra Shiksha Assam (SSA) say they have not received any official complaints.

The All Assam School Uniform Supplier Association said that some schools have already returned the uniforms because the cloth is of bad quality and does not follow the rules. These uniforms were given free to students by the government.

The association said that for students from Class 1 to 8, local vendors — about 1,500 across Assam — supplied the uniforms. This work was completed by 31st March 2025. But for Class 9 and 10, the work was given to four big companies from outside Assam. Two of them are from Mumbai and two from Rajasthan.

Mainuddin Ahmed, the Vice President of the association, said many schools have not received the uniforms yet. The school year began on April 1, but Class 9 and 10 students are still waiting for their uniforms. Students from Class 1 to 8 are already wearing their new uniforms.

Ahmed also said that the few schools that did get uniforms complained about the size, stitching, and cloth quality.

Kalyan Dihingia, an Assistant Officer at Samagra Shiksha Assam, said, “We have not received any written complaints. If something wrong is happening, we will look into it.”

Another government officer said, “If schools are facing problems, they should inform us. we will investigate and take action.”
