Geneva: The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), a global group that works for media safety, has reported that 55 journalists have been killed around the world since January 1, 2025. On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day (May 3), the PEC called for justice and action against those responsible.
PEC President Blaise Lempen said the day reminds everyone to protect press freedom and to support journalists who face threats, censorship, and violence. He highlighted that in Gaza alone, at least 18 journalists have been killed this year, with over 200 killed since October 2023 by Israeli forces.
Lempen stressed that killing journalists must not go unpunished and urged global efforts to end this violence and impunity.
PEC’s South and Southeast Asia representative, Nava Thakuria, shared that in Pakistan, senior Sindhi journalist Allah Dino Shar was killed on April 11 in Khairpur. In India, three journalists – Mukesh Chandrakar, Raghavendra Vajpayee, and Sahadev Dey – lost their lives, while Nepal reported the death of journalist Suresh Rajak.
PEC and journalist unions are demanding strong action and justice for all journalists who have been killed while doing their duty.
