Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated India’s first AI-powered “phygital” banking branch of Slice Small Finance Bank at GS Road in Guwahati.

The next-generation banking branch combines physical and digital banking services through AI-enabled self-service kiosks, paperless cash deposits and withdrawals, and simplified digital onboarding facilities. The branch aims to make banking more accessible and inclusive for customers across different segments by blending physical banking support with digital convenience.

According to the bank, the initiative will help expand access to responsible credit, savings and payment solutions for individuals and small businesses, especially those who previously had limited access to modern banking services.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the AI-enabled branch represents another step towards building a more inclusive financial ecosystem for both urban and underserved communities. He stated that the investment aligns with the Assam government’s efforts to promote technology-driven development and innovation in the state.

The Chief Minister also said the collaboration between the Assam government and Slice Small Finance Bank reflects the type of partnership needed for Assam’s economic and technological growth. He added that launching India’s first digital and AI-powered banking branch in Guwahati highlights Assam’s readiness to support the future of Indian banking.

Highlighting one of the branch’s unique features, Dr. Sarma said customers would be able to access credit directly through the UPI interface without requiring a separate application process. He noted that the facility would particularly benefit small business owners and women entrepreneurs by enabling faster access to working capital through mobile phones.

The Chief Minister further reiterated the state government’s commitment to making Assam a destination for responsible and technology-driven investments. He said the government is focused on creating opportunities for businesses and young people while improving financial inclusion across the state.

Former Assam minister Ashok Singhal, Managing Director and CEO of Slice Small Finance Bank Rajan Bajaj, and Managing Director and CEO of National Payments Corporation of India Dilip Asbe were among those present at the event.
