Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday accepted the Assembly election results and extended greetings to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while asserting that the Congress will continue to play the role of a responsible opposition.

Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, Gogoi said the party respects the people’s mandate and hopes the new government will address unresolved issues with fresh thinking. “We have accepted the results and congratulate the BJP. We hope they will not repeat the mistakes of the last five years,” he said.

Taking moral responsibility for the party’s defeat, Gogoi thanked party workers, supporters, and senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for their guidance.

He admitted that the party could not win the expected number of seats but stressed that it has not “lost heart.” Gogoi said the Congress will continue to stand with the people and raise issues of public concern. “Even from outside the Assembly, we will fulfill our responsibilities as an opposition. We will keep a close watch on the government’s actions and speak out against corruption,” he said.

Gogoi also announced a review meeting on May 9 in Guwahati, where both winning and defeated candidates will discuss the election results and plan the party’s future strategy.

Raising concerns over the election process, he said there is a need to review results in several constituencies. Referring to concerns raised earlier by Rahul Gandhi, Gogoi alleged irregularities in voter lists and questioned the transparency of the system.

Despite the setback, Gogoi said the Congress will reorganize and reconnect with the people. “No one should think that Congress has given up. From today, we are ready to go back to the people and rebuild the party with their support,” he said.

He added that the party will work to strengthen democracy in Assam and act as a voice against injustice. “Both the ruling party and opposition are important in a democracy. We will continue to play our role with responsibility,” he said.

The press conference was attended by senior party leaders, including Ripun Bora, Mira Borthakur and Abdur Rahim.
