Guwahati: Gauhati University, in collaboration with Freie University Berlin, inaugurated a two-day international workshop on “Small Tea Plantations in Assam: Land, Labour, Production, Rural Change & Sustainability” on Friday. The workshop aims to connect researchers, policymakers, and academics to discuss the challenges and sustainability of Assam’s small tea plantation sector.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, the Chief Guest, highlighted the need for academic research to guide policies and support small-scale tea farmers. He described the workshop as a platform to link local realities with global research for sustainable solutions.

A key initiative of the event is an academic exchange program. Under this, scholars from Assam will pursue PhDs at Gauhati University under Prof. Bimal Kumar Kar, with Prof. Hermann Kreutzmann from Freie University Berlin as co-supervisor. At the same time, two German scholars will complete their PhDs at Freie University, supervised by Prof. Stefan Schuette, with Prof. Kreutzmann as co-supervisor.

Prof. Kreutzmann emphasized that this exchange strengthens international collaboration and helps develop practical solutions for small tea growers.

The event, organized by Gauhati University’s Department of Geography, with support from Freie University Berlin’s Centre for Development Studies, is part of an ongoing research partnership aimed at understanding rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable growth.
