Guwahati: A fire safety awareness programme and evacuation mock drill was held at Marwari Hospitals on Friday as part of International Fire Safety Week 2026.
The programme was organised by the hospital authority in collaboration with Fire and Emergency Services, Assam (Pan Bazaar unit). The drill was conducted inside the hospital premises, where staff members actively took part.
A team of fire service officials attended the event, including RTC Moon Onjon Ramchiary, Sub Officer Kamleshwar Kalita, LFM Akon Ramchiary, ER Dilip Orang, Fireman Abhinas Ramchiary, along with drivers Sankar Das and Bibhuti Medhi. Senior officials of the hospital, including Joint Secretary Manish Khatuwala, Fire Safety Officer Jayanta Saikia, Superintendent Rohit Upadhayay, Nursing Superintendent Jubida Rynjah and GM (Operations) Kamala Singh Das were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, RTC Moon Onjon Ramchiary said the drill was well conducted and completed within time. He stressed that everyone should know how to use fire extinguishers and handle fire emergencies.
Fire Safety Officer Jayanta Saikia said such drills usually take only a few minutes but must be done properly with full safety measures.
Hospital Superintendent Rohit Upadhayay said the drill will help staff both professionally and personally to deal with emergencies like fire, earthquakes and other disasters. However, he pointed out some mistakes, such as stopping the alarm early, using lifts during evacuation and bringing a patient near the gate before the ambulance arrived. He said these issues should be corrected in future drills.
The fire service team appreciated the performance of the hospital staff, saying it was better than previous years. At the end of the programme, the fire personnel were honoured with a traditional phulam gamusa.
A special highlight of this year’s drill was the use of a Hydraulic Landing Van for the first time at the hospital.
