Guwahati: A shocking theft case has come to light in Guwahati, where a man allegedly carried out multiple theft incidents by disguising himself as a woman.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Janmoni Sharma, a resident of Sipajhar in Darrang district. He was arrested by Basistha Police during a special operation.
Police said Sharma used to wear traditional and modern women’s clothes like mekhela chador, salwar kameez, and even used wigs to hide his identity. In this disguise, he moved freely in busy areas of the city and carried out thefts for a long time without raising suspicion.
He mainly targeted houses and public places with low security. Taking advantage of his disguise, he allegedly stole cash, mobile phones, and gold ornaments from different locations.
Police also revealed that Sharma’s wife Dhanada Devi and another associate, Gagan Barman, were involved in the crimes. All three were arrested based on a secret tip-off.
During the operation, police recovered several items, including women’s clothes used for disguise, suspected stolen gold ornaments, and tools like screwdrivers, hammers, and cutters used for breaking locks. A scooty and an Eeco van, allegedly used in the crimes, were also seized.
The police have started further investigation to find out in which other areas of the city the group was involved. They are also searching for more possible associates.
This incident shows how criminals are using new methods to avoid detection and commit crimes.
