Guwahati: While Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya hoisted the Tricolour at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara to mark the 76th Republic Day, reports of explosions from three locations in Guwahati sparked tension. The incidents were reported from Rehabari, Lalmati, and Katabari, with swift police action initiated to investigate.
In Rehabari and Lalmati, residents reported hearing loud explosions early in the morning. At Katabari, a suspicious bag was discovered near Dream City Hotel, prompting immediate action by the police. Guwahati Commissioner of Police Dr. Partha Sarathi Mahanta confirmed that no explosives were found at any of the locations, and investigations are ongoing.
“In Katabari, the bag contained ID cards and clothes, likely left behind by someone near ISBT. The area was sanitised, and no hazardous materials were found. In Lalmati, while explosions were reported, no evidence of explosives has been detected,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Padmanabh Baruah.
Meanwhile, the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I), a banned militant outfit, claimed responsibility for the explosions through a statement to the media. The group stated that the “IED blasts” were a form of protest against Republic Day celebrations in Assam. The statement emphasized that the explosions were not intended to harm indigenous people but served as a message to discourage participation in such national events.
Police and security forces have intensified surveillance across the city, and additional personnel have been deployed to ensure safety. The incidents have raised concerns among residents, though authorities have assured that the situation is under control.
Further updates are awaited.
