CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Visits Khatara Satra, Assures Support for Preservation and Development
Darrang: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Khatara Satra, a historic religious and cultural institution founded in 1568 AD by Lechakonia Sri Sri Gobinda Ata, a revered figure in the Neo-Vaishnavite tradition. During his visit, Dr. Sarma offered prayers for the welfare and prosperity of the people of Assam.
Addressing devotees, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of preserving spiritual and cultural heritage, stating that the government is committed to addressing the Satra’s present challenges. He also noted that this visit fulfilled a promise made during the panchayat elections.
The visit featured a vibrant display of traditional cultural performances, including Krishna Pravesh Nritya from the Ankiya Bhaona tradition, Khuliya Bhauriya Nritya, Thiya Naam, and Bhortal Nritya, all presented by Satra artistes. Dr. Sarma expressed appreciation for the performers and the efforts of the Satra Management Committee.
In a subsequent meeting with the Committee, the Chief Minister was briefed on key concerns, including requests for the reconstruction of the Monikut and Namghar, and the allocation of 1,000 bighas of land in the Char-Chapori area of Darrang for agricultural use. Dr. Sarma assured that appropriate action would follow upon receipt of formal proposals from the local MLA and Deputy Commissioner.
He reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to protecting and developing Assam’s Satra institutions, recognising their role in fostering spirituality, culture, and community welfare.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by MLA Paramananda Rajbongshi, former MLA Gurujyoti Das, and Satra Management Committee President Jadav Chandra Mahanta, along with other dignitaries.
On his way back to Guwahati, Dr. Sarma stopped at the Shahid Stambha (Martyrs’ Memorial) in Patharughat, where he paid tribute to the martyrs of the Patharughat uprising.
