Guwahati: The Assam Assembly witnessed heated arguments and chaos on Friday, leading to three adjournments. The session was paused twice for 10 minutes and once for 5 minutes due to fights between MLAs.

MLA Kurmi Threatens Akhil Gogoi

The trouble started when Moriani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi got angry at Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi during a discussion on road and bridge construction.

While talking about the government’s work for development, Kurmi mentioned efforts to help minority communities. But when Akhil Gogoi interrupted, Kurmi shouted:

“I will not let you speak. Akhil Gogoi, stay quiet. I will break your microphone. Do not interrupt.”

This made the Opposition very angry, and a loud argument followed. Deputy Chairperson Numal Momin warned Kurmi and paused the session for 10 minutes.

Akhil Gogoi Walks Out in Protest

Unhappy with the warning given to Kurmi, Akhil Gogoi left the Assembly for 10 minutes. Speaking to reporters later, Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed said:

“Kurmi threatened to break microphones and insulted us. When I objected, he tried to attack me and called me ‘stupid.’”

Ahmed demanded that Kurmi be suspended for a year, saying the Assembly’s discipline is getting worse. Akhil Gogoi called the day “a black mark in Assam’s history” and asked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take action.

Kurmi Apologizes But Blames Others

Later, Kurmi apologized, saying:

“I made a mistake and have said sorry twice for using bad words and approaching the Opposition. But Sherman Ali also used offensive words like ‘shit’ and did not apologize.”

He added that while he is committed to his work, he will not accept humiliation.

This incident has created a huge debate, with people questioning the behavior of elected leaders in the Assam Assembly.
