Assamese Composer Lakshyahira Das Passes Away at 94

Guwahati: Renowned Assamese composer Lakshyahira Das passed away on Saturday at the age of 94 due to age-related ailments.

A former professor at Cotton College, she made history in 1948 as the first woman artist to receive All India Radio’s recognition as a lyricist, composer, and singer.

Her artistic legacy includes over 2,000 musical compositions and lyrics for many renowned vocalists. She also performed as a singer. Beyond music, she was a prolific writer with over 50 publications, covering poetry, children’s literature, short stories, translations, and educational works.

The Assam government and several socio-cultural organizations honored her with multiple awards. She was also a member of prestigious institutions like Sahitya Akademi, Authors Guild of India, Poetry Society of India, and Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Her contributions to Assamese music and literature remain an inspiration for generations.
