Amit Shah Inaugurates Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Assam

Dergaon: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon today. The academy features advanced training infrastructure and modern technology. Shah also laid the foundation stone for a residential complex within the academy.

The Assam government has allocated ₹1,024 crores for the academy’s development. In the first phase, a five-storey building with smart classrooms, an arms simulator, a library, and a research lab was built for ₹167 crores. A police museum and a modern parade ground have also been added. The second phase, costing ₹425 crores, will include residential facilities for 2,640 trainees and housing for officers and staff.

Dr. Sarma stated that this is the first-ever institution dedicated to Lachit Barphukan. He highlighted Assam’s law and order improvements, including a 60% drop in crime rates from 2020 to 2024 and an increase in conviction rates from 5.5% to 25%.

The state government plans to expand the campus with sports facilities, a CBSE school, a nursing academy, and a skill development center. There is also a proposal to set up a police medical college in the future.

The event was attended by Union Ministers, state ministers, MPs, MLAs, and top officials, marking a significant step towards strengthening Assam’s police force and infrastructure.
