Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) of exacerbating the recent flooding in Guwahati, labeling the situation as “flood jihad.” The accusation follows heavy rainfall that caused widespread waterlogging and significant inconvenience across the city.
CM Sarma alleged that the construction activities at USTM have contributed to the severe waterlogging in Guwahati, particularly affecting areas along the GS Road.
In response, USTM issued a press statement refuting the claims, emphasizing their commitment to sustainable practices. The university highlighted its status as a NAAC ‘A’ accredited institution, recognized as a Green Campus. USTM detailed its initiatives, including water harvesting, groundwater recharging, and afforestation drives, as part of its efforts to minimize environmental impact.

The university clarified that its campus occupies a small part of the Baridua area in Ri-Bhoi district, and it contributes only a minor portion of the water flowing through the Kiling Road to the GS Road. USTM also mentioned that all its infrastructure expansions have received the necessary permissions from the Government of Meghalaya.
