Guwahati: To boost awareness and knowledge about HIV and sexually transmitted infections among the general population, especially the youth, the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) launched a two-month Intensified IEC Campaign on International Youth Day. The campaign was inaugurated at the Sri Sri Madhavadeva International Auditorium in Kalakshetra, Guwahati by Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Transport and Excise, alongside other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Keshab Mahanta highlighted the rising HIV prevalence in Assam, attributing it to risky behaviors such as sharing needles among drug users. He emphasized the need for vigorous campaigns like the Intensified IEC Campaign to combat the dual threats of HIV and drug abuse. “A change in the lifestyle of youth is essential to prevent this crisis,” he added.

Celebrity icon Zublee Baruah also spoke at the event, urging the youth to take proactive steps in raising awareness about HIV. She stressed the importance of the younger generation in shaping the future, encouraging them to avoid destructive behaviors and instead, be advocates for change. “Your life is precious. Don’t ruin it. Be the change,” she advised.
Dr. P Ashok Babu, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, reiterated the importance of resilience and self-belief among the youth, advising them not to engage in high-risk behaviors due to stress or frustration.
Dr. Indranoshee Das, Project Director of ASACS, outlined the campaign’s objectives, stating that the initiative aims to reach 1,000 villages across 10 districts in Assam. Awareness meetings will be held in rural areas, with additional activities planned for educational institutions. The campaign will utilize various communication mediums to disseminate vital HIV messages.
During the event, Red Ribbon Clubs from five educational institutions were recognized for their efforts in promoting HIV awareness within their communities.The campaign is being simultaneously rolled out in 10 high-prevalence districts across Assam, including Kamrup (M), Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, and Karimganj.
